A word from Mera Studio Architects:

mera sound sconce overview

“Our idea for the sound sconce was to highlight and not hide the speaker—to think of it as an element in the room capable of transforming the experience via sound and light,” said Mera Principal Architect Tara Marshall. “All too often, speakers are the last element considered in a space. We wanted to rethink the speaker and develop a design that would shift the concept of the speaker from an afterthought to a forethought, and the duality of a speaker that can illuminate a room just seemed to make sense. Why not integrate sound where you might already install a light? From there, we set out with Leon’s team to create a speaker equally as beautiful as a light.”

A word from Leon Speakers:

“We’ve learned so much through our collaboration with Mera,” said Leon founder and president Noah Kaplan. “Both organizations are committed to ending the disconnect between design and technology.

Through our work with Tara and Meghan, we have gained a new perspective on modern architecture and the possibilities for the future of AV and technology—a future led by thoughtful, collaborative design.”

The Mera Sound Sconce contributes to the character and materiality of its surroundings. It features unique dual illumination, emitting light from behind both its shell and grille. Its magnetic grille attachment offers a seamless look that is suitable for retrofits and new installations.

The Details:

This new sconce collection celebrates the synergy of Mera’s elegant materiality and Leon’s high-quality craftsmanship. Each sconce includes a cast-aluminum shell, handmade high-performance audio components, custom-knit bouclé grille fabric, and a textured powder-coat finish.

It is available in single units, pairs, or bundled with the Sonos Amp. For retrofit applications, an onboard LED driver option is available. It is available in three colors: Linen, Black Sand, and Clay. Shipping starts in June 2024.

Sustainable Living with Motorized Shades

In today’s rapidly changing world, the importance of sustainable living has never been more apparent. As concerns about climate change, resource depletion, and environmental degradation continue escalating, individuals and families increasingly seek ways to reduce their ecological footprint and embrace more eco-friendly lifestyles.

From energy-efficient appliances to renewable energy sources, the choices we make in our homes can significantly impact the planet and future generations. One such choice that has gained traction in recent years is the adoption of motorized blackout shades, which offer a compelling blend of energy efficiency, comfort, and style while promoting eco-friendly practices within the home. This comprehensive guide explores how motorized shades can play a vital role in sustainable living, offering energy-saving benefits, enhanced comfort, and environmental responsibility.

Are blackout shades energy efficient?

When evaluating whether blackout curtains are sustainable, it’s essential to consider various factors, including their manufacturing process, materials used, and environmental impact throughout their lifecycle. While they offer benefits such as light blocking and thermal insulation, their sustainability can vary depending on several key factors:

Material Sourcing

The sustainability of motorized blackout window shades begins with the materials used in their production. Curtains made from eco-friendly materials such as organic cotton, linen, or recycled fabrics tend to have a lower environmental impact than those made from conventional materials. Organic cotton, for example, is grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilizers, reducing chemical exposure and promoting soil health. Similarly, recycled fabrics repurpose materials that would otherwise end up in landfills, conserving resources and reducing waste.

Manufacturing Practices

The manufacturing process can significantly impact their sustainability. Those produced in facilities prioritizing energy efficiency, water conservation, and waste reduction tend to have a lower environmental footprint. Look for motorized blackout shades manufactured using eco-friendly processes, such as low-impact dyeing methods, water recycling systems, and renewable energy sources. Additionally, certifications such as Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) or OEKO-TEX Standard 100 indicate compliance with strict environmental and social criteria, assuring sustainability.

Chemical Treatments

Some window treatments may undergo chemical treatments to enhance their light-blocking or flame-retardant properties. While these treatments may offer functional benefits, they can also introduce harmful chemicals into the environment and pose health risks to occupants. Look for curtains labeled as free from hazardous chemicals such as formaldehyde, phthalates, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Certifications such as Greenguard or GOTS ensure that curtains meet stringent chemical emissions and environmental safety standards.

Durability and Longevity

Durability and longevity are essential considerations for their sustainability. Well-made curtains are designed to withstand regular use and are less likely to require frequent replacements, reducing waste generation and resource consumption. Look for window treatments with reinforced seams, quality hardware, and durable fabrics that maintain their performance and appearance over time. Investing in high-quality curtains may initially cost more but can pay off in the long run through extended lifespan and reduced environmental impact.

End-of-life Disposal

Proper disposal of blackout shades at the end of their useful life is crucial for minimizing environmental impact. Curtains made from natural fibers such as cotton or linen can be composted or recycled at the end of their lifespan, returning nutrients to the soil or diverting materials from landfills. Synthetic curtains made from materials such as polyester or nylon may be more challenging to dispose of sustainably, as they do not biodegrade easily. Look for curtain manufacturers or retailers that offer take-back or recycling programs to ensure responsible disposal and reduce waste.

What are the best energy-saving shades?

Several factors come into play when selecting motorized blackout window shades for energy-saving purposes. Here are some options to consider for the best energy-saving motorized shades:

  • Solar-powered shades: They harness the power of sunlight to operate, eliminating the need for batteries or electrical wiring. These shades feature built-in solar panels that capture sunlight and convert it into energy to power the motorized mechanism. Solar-powered shades are highly energy-efficient and environmentally friendly, making them an excellent choice for sustainable living.
  • Insulating shades: Designed to provide thermal insulation by trapping air between the window and the shade, reducing heat transfer and improving energy efficiency. These shades help maintain consistent indoor temperatures year-round, reducing the need for heating and cooling and lowering energy consumption. Look for shades with cellular or honeycomb construction, which offer superior insulation properties and energy savings.
  • Automated scheduling: Shades with automated scheduling capabilities allow you to program them to adjust automatically throughout the day based on factors such as time of day, sunlight intensity, and room occupancy. By scheduling your shades to lower during peak sunlight hours to block out heat and glare, you can reduce the load on your HVAC system and save energy. Additionally, scheduling your shades to close at night can help retain heat during colder months, improving energy efficiency.
  • Integration with smart home systems: Motorized shades that integrate with smart home systems offer advanced energy-saving features and customization options. Look for shades compatible with popular smart home platforms that allow you to control your shades using voice commands or smartphone apps. Integration with smart home systems also enables you to create automated routines and scenes that optimize energy usage based on your preferences and lifestyle.
  • Dual shades: Dual roller shades, or dual blinds, combine two separate shades in one housing, typically one sheer or light-filtering shade and one blackout or room-darkening shade. This dual design lets you switch between sheer and blackout modes to control light levels and privacy throughout the day. By adjusting the position of the dual shades based on sunlight intensity and room occupancy, you can maximize natural light while minimizing heat gain and glare, resulting in energy savings.

How to Integrate Window Treatments with Smart Home Systems

It’s 2024, and we’re living in an interconnected world. The concept of a smart home has become increasingly prevalent, offering homeowners unprecedented convenience, comfort, and control over their living spaces. Smart or intelligent home technology allows seamless automation and customization to suit individual preferences and lifestyles, from lighting and thermostats to security cameras and entertainment systems.

One area that has seen significant advancements in recent years is the integration of window treatments with smart home systems. By incorporating motorized shades, blinds, or curtains into your smart home ecosystem, you can enhance the functionality and efficiency of your home while enjoying greater comfort and convenience. In this comprehensive guide, we’ll explore the various methods and technologies available to unlock the full potential of automation capabilities of automated window treatments for a smart home.

How do smart or intelligent window shades work?

Smart home window treatments are equipped with motorized components that allow for remote control and automation. They enable users to adjust their position, angle, or opacity with the touch of a button, smartphone app, or voice command. Built-in sensors and environmental data sources provide real-time feedback on factors such as sunlight intensity, temperature, and room occupancy, allowing for intelligent automation and optimization of natural light levels and privacy throughout the day.

How can I integrate window treatments into my smart home system?

To achieve seamless integration, exploring all the options available and selecting the solution that best fits your needs and preferences is essential. Here are some key integration options to consider:

Wireless communication protocols

Wireless communication protocols such as Zigbee, Z-Wave, and Wi-Fi facilitate seamless communication between your window treatments and other devices. Zigbee and Z-Wave are popular for their low power consumption and robust mesh networking capabilities, allowing for reliable communication even in large homes or buildings. On the other hand, Wi-Fi offers broader connectivity and compatibility with existing home networks, making it a convenient option for homeowners who prefer a simple setup process. Understanding the strengths and limitations of each protocol is essential for selecting window treatments for a smart home that integrates seamlessly with your system.

Compatible smart home devices

Compatibility with other smart home devices and platforms is critical to achieving a fully integrated, intelligent, and cohesive smart home ecosystem. When choosing smart home window treatments, look for compatibility with popular platforms such as Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, Apple HomeKit, or Samsung SmartThings. This compatibility allows you to control your intelligent shades using voice commands or smartphone apps and integrate them into your smart home ecosystem’s automation routines and scenes.

Consider the availability of third-party integrations and developer APIs, which can further expand the capabilities and interoperability of your window coverings with other connected devices and services.

Motorization and automation features

Automated window treatments in smart homes offer advanced automation capabilities that enhance convenience. Look for shades, blinds, or curtains that support programmable schedules, sensor-based automation, and remote control options. These features allow you to automate the operation of your shades based on factors such as time of day, sunlight intensity, room occupancy, or environmental conditions, maximizing energy savings and comfort while minimizing manual intervention. Additionally, consider the availability of advanced features such as scene-based control, group scheduling, and integration with intelligent sensors and environmental data sources, which can further enhance automation capabilities and their versatility.

Smart home hub integration

A smart home hub is the central control point for all connected devices and systems within your home, allowing for seamless communication and coordination between different devices and protocols. When integrating smart home window treatments with your existing system, ensure compatibility with your chosen smart home hub or controller. Whether you prefer a dedicated hub from a reputable brand or a more versatile solution such as a compatible smart speaker or voice assistant, selecting the right hub ensures seamless communication and coordination between your shades and other smart devices. The availability of cloud-based integrations and remote access capabilities allow you to control them from anywhere using a mobile app or web interface, even when you’re away from home.

Installation and setup considerations

Proper installation and setup are essential for ensuring smooth integration and optimal performance of your window treatments for a smart home. Follow manufacturer guidelines and recommendations for installation, including mounting brackets, wiring, and calibration procedures. Take advantage of online tutorials, user manuals, and customer support resources to troubleshoot any issues or challenges encountered during setup. Also, consult with a professional installer or integrator to ensure a seamless and hassle-free integration process, especially for complex setups or custom installations. By investing time and effort in proper installation and configuration, you can maximize your integrated system’s reliability, performance, and longevity, ensuring years of trouble-free operation and enjoyment.

Indoor window shades encompass a multitude of components that not only enhance the aesthetics of your living space but also provide essential functionalities for comfort and convenience. From considering privacy needs and selecting the perfect fabric opacity to optimize energy efficiency and safeguarding against external elements, each indoor window shade component plays a vital role in creating a harmonious and sustainable environment within your home.

Aesthetics, privacy, and protection

Living in a glass house might not be practical for most, but understanding the importance of windows and their coverings is crucial. Balancing the privacy of occupants, the scenic view, and the aesthetic appeal of window treatments is an ongoing consideration. With so many shade options available today, from textures, finishes, colors, and opacities, you can easily match your home’s overall aesthetic. Also, shading solutions are vital in safeguarding your soft furnishings, such as paintings, carpets, furniture, and more, by protecting against harmful UV rays.

Fabric opacity

The choice of shading fabric opacity, whether sheer, translucent, or opaque, depends on the room’s function and desired atmosphere. Transparent fabrics allow you to enjoy the view while protecting you from the elements.

Automated shading based on environmental conditions, such as raising on winter days and lowering during warmer times, can yield impressive results, contributing to net-zero or even net-negative energy status.

Architectural and décor shading

Understanding the two primary types of shading (Décor and Architectural) is essential. Décor shading embraces a minimalist look with an exposed roller, while architectural shading hides the hardware, providing many options to achieve the desired aesthetic.

Shade end cap options

Shade end caps in various color options enhance the aesthetic appeal, transforming windows with a sleek and upscale design.

Power options

When considering powering your shading solutions, you have two options: hardwiring and wireless. One wireless example is Crestron’s lithium-ion battery, which ensures uninterrupted performance for up to 12 months.

Controlling and automating shading

Shading control has gotten even more convenient with options like control apps, automation, voice control, and integration with sensors for efficiency. With motorized window shade components seamlessly integrated into these systems, adjusting the shading levels based on natural light and occupancy enhances the overall smart home experience.
